Perspective

The pier stretching into Hanalei Bay is perhaps the iconic landmark of the area. The view from below transports us to world that belies the rhythmic activity and energy of local and visiting beachgoers alike that descend on the world-famous bay every day. From this perspective, the ocean is transformed by a longer shutter speed into a calm, cottony-soft blanket with only the slightest hints of waves. Come by; relax, enjoy, and experience the calming spirit of the Island from under the Pier!

Valley View

Lush forests nestled in the valleys of Kaua‘i are quintessentially Hawai‘ian. Almost no scene more ably captures the imagination than the views that await from above, within the mountainous interiors of Kaua‘i. Located but a brief drive and hike from the center of Līhu‘e, this breathtaking scene was a suitable reward for persevering through a hike in a soaking shower right before sunset. With just enough of a break in the rain and cloud cover, we were treated to the deep yellow-oranges and spectacular diffuse light on the iridescent foliage of the valley.

Eye of the Storm

Surrounded by storm clouds and passing showers on the North Shore of Kaua‘i, this popular lagoon, nestled within one of many inlets in the area is affectionately known as “Queen’s Bath”. Just mere minutes before disappearing behind the clouds bursting in the distance, the setting sun puts on a brief but colorful show as the typical throng of visitors turn their backs and begin the uphill trek through the forest to the road, using the last rays of daylight. Do not, however, allow the serenity of the lagoon and shoreline deceive you – during the winter months, this entire lava shelf is pummeled by the fierce Pacific, and is the site of many ocean accidents where even the most experienced swimmers are forced to revere the unstoppable forces of nature.

The serene waters of the Huleia river gently lap at the base of the Haupu mountain range on one side and guard the hidden entryways to the historic Menehune Fishpond on the other side. Along this winding and increasingly popular river for paddleboard and kayak tours lives the 238-acre Hulei National Wildlife Refuge - a beautifully unspoiled home to endangered bird and plant life. Capturing the stillness of this gentle hideaway after the frequent rainstorms that characterize the melancholy nature of the micro-climate on the southern end of Lihu‘e is always a stunning reward. Misty Canyon

Dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, Kaua‘i’s Waimea Canyon was formed by a number of geologic events including lava flows, erosion, and collapse of portions of the area. The resulting spectacle is as surprising in it’s location in Hawaii as it is magnificent. The unique climate of the canyon area produces a heavy mist on an almost daily basis, often shielding the chasm below. Dramatic waterfalls cascade relentlessly down the precipitous cliff faces into the meandering streams and rivers below.
